What is best setting for server MaxClientRate and TickRate?

Post by samgold »

Below code is from my ini, I see a other people using MaxClientRate=25000 and NetServerTickRate=40 both seem high to me, but not sure what is a good setting. I'm running an 8 slot server hosted on AOWC. I'm getting a lot of screen tear/jerky movement when I play, and I have 45 ping.

Code: Select all

[IpDrv.TcpNetDriver]
AllowDownloads=False
MaxDownloadSize=0
DownloadManagers=IpDrv.HTTPDownload
DownloadManagers=Engine.ChannelDownload
;NetConnectionClassName=IpDrv.TcpipConnection
ConnectionTimeout=40.000000
InitialConnectTimeout=500.000000
AckTimeout=1.0
KeepAliveTime=0.200000
MaxClientRate=10000
MaxInternetClientRate=10000
SimLatency=0
RelevantTimeout=5.000000
SpawnPrioritySeconds=1.000000
ServerTravelPause=4.0
NetServerMaxTickRate=31
LanServerMaxTickRate=31
AllowPlayerPortUnreach=False
LogPortUnreach=False
MaxConnPerIPPerMinute=5
LogMaxConnPerIPPerMin=False

Steve Polge (spelling?) of Epic said that the MaxClientRate draw would or should never go over about 7000 draw for any player of UT99.
A good number of servers use even less than that. (5000 - 6000 - ?)
GameServers.com leaves it at the stock 20000.
I would say that anything between 7000 and 10000 would be good - not really critical though.
I just leave it at the stock setting as it really is only needed if you have a limited bandwidth, such as on a home based server.

The NetServerMaxTickRate is another story.
Unless you have specific tic needs for a specific weapon it is best left at Stock Setting!
NetServerMaxTickRate=20
This was highly researched and tested by Epic for UT99/GOTY, and is considered Optimum set at 20!
(other settings can mess up weapon timing)

My personal opinion is simple:

MAXCLIENTRATE=5000

Leave the other setting alone.

MAXCLIENTRATE=5000
With this there is sometime error for the ACE check.

NetServerMaxTickRate=20
With 20 no sniper head shot zp or no that lag :meh:

Like I said...
Unless you have specific tic needs for specific weapons (or mods) it is best left at the Stock Settings!
And...
I just leave MaxClientRate at the stock setting as it really is only needed if you have a limited bandwidth, such as on a home based server, (or if it causes problems with ACE) LOL.

If you want to test your server yourself you have TickDemo http://unrealtournament.99.free.fr/utfi ... ckDemo.zip

with it you can set netspeed et tickrate server and do captures like that

Raising the tickrate is not the answer.

http://wiki.unrealadmin.org/Netspeed_Tutorial_(UT)

Just like it says in the tutorial, if you can't register a hit with a tickrate of 20, then you suck.
