ut-files.com may be closing

Post by Skillz »

Due to my recent lay off at my job, I no longer have a steady income of money. Therefore, luxuries that I used to have may be going away unless I can find another descent paying job again. One of the first things on the list to go will be the server I rent monthly to host this site. It costs me $180 per month to run this place, the way it's looking I wont have the funds to afford that anymore.

So a few options are;

I get enough monthly donations to keep the site running.
I find another job that pays enough to afford the place.
I find another job that pays enough where I can barely afford the place and donations can help with the rest.

Guess it's up to the community at this point.

Rest assured, if the site does go down it will come back once I get back on my feet again.

Oops, some of the posts here sort of got deleted. They were posted on the old server, now that the DNS updated I see that they are missing. I wasn't aware that the old server's httpd/web server was still running. I shut it down now, so hopefully everything from here on out will be on the new server. Well, at least until it shuts down.

Hopefully the re-posts around the net will get you some interest.

Is your issue purely rental ? or is bandwidth an issue ?
You can ease bandwidth using the free Coral CDN.
Maybe a mirror on the Web Archive would be an option, or an FTP mirror.

http://www.ut-files.com.nyud.net UT-FILES via the CDN. It works very well

Hope this helps, til a permanent solution happens.

I'm a little fuzzy on this. Why would it cost you anything?

Or better, why not move everything to a free resource? There's plenty of them out there.

What do you mean why would it cost me money? This site isn't free. I have to pay for it.

If I can find one that will allow me to store over 1TB worth of files/data that consume ~2TB of monthly bandwidth on a slow month then by all means, point me in that direction. I assure you, once I get everything transferred to such a service, they'll shut it down for "abuse" of there service. You've gotta read the fine print on them.

I pay for a server. The server hosts the site. If I can't pay for the server, the site goes offline. It's not a matter of resources running out. The server can handle the load just fine, but it can't do that if I stop paying for it.

I was already confused why you deleted the posts.
Anyway:

- get a job with lots of $$$$
- donations (also a current balance would be nice, so people can see when a donation is highly needed)
- generate some income by advertisements on the site
- win the lottery (<-- I'm for this one :D)

I didn't delete them. :wtc:

I just forgot to shut down the old server when the new one came online. So some people were still being directed to the old server. My bad. :hs:
